To celebrate National Public Lands Day, the BLM Lake Havasu Field Office in Arizona chose to clean up the area in and around the Historic Schwanbeck's Store Ruins located near Parker, Arizona. Schwanbeck's Store was built in the 1930s to service the small, now Ghost Town of Crossroads. The store was used as a convenience center and U.S. Post Office until it's closing in 1973. During its time, Crossroads developed to a population of 2,000-3,000 people and served to support construction of the Metropolitan Water District Aqueduct System as well as the Parker Dam.

The day started off windy and rainy but our crew of 8 federal employees and 12 volunteers from the Arizona State Parks Site Stewards Program, Mohave Community College, and BLM Campground Hosts, was determined to complete the task. We cleared organic debris from the historic foundation, trimmed hazardous overhanging trees, and removed organic debris from the site's interior to fill a 40 yard roll off dumpster. The day was finished off by installing a new informational sign to showcase a landmark to our local history. We are proud of our local history and were happy to enhance the beauty of a remnant from the past.
